Microsoft SQL Server provides a dedicated administrator connection ( DAC). The DAC allows an administrator to access a running instance of SQL Server Database Engine to troubleshoot problems on the server—even when the server is unresponsive to other client connections. The DAC is available through the sqlcmd utility and SQL Server Management Studio. The connection is only allowed from a client running on the server. No network connections are permitted. To use SQL Server Management Studio with the DAC, connect to an instance of the SQL Server Database Engine with Query Editor by typing ADMIN: before the server name. Object Explorer cannot connect using the DAC. Using a Dedicated Administrator Connection Show: Inherited Protected.
Applies To: SQL Server 2016 Preview SQL Server Management Studio ( SSMS) is an integrated environment for accessing, configuring, managing, administering, and developing all components of SQL Server. SSMS combines a broad group of graphical tools with a number of rich script editors to provide access to SQL Server to developers and administrators of all skill levels. SSMS combines the features of Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, and Analysis Manager, included in previous releases of SQL Server, into a single environment. In addition, SSMS works with all components of SQL Server such as Reporting Services and Integration Services. Developers get a familiar experience, and database administrators get a single comprehensive utility that combines easy-to-use graphical tools with rich scripting capabilities. To get the latest version, see Download SQL Server Management Studio.
Microsoft SQL has several components. You can install SQL Studio (the GUI you're using SQL Server itself (the actual database, to which SQL Studio can connect Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and others. You currently have a SQL 2005 server running, and you're connecting to it with SQL Studio 2012. That's OK! But if you'd rather have a SQL 2012 database on your local machine, you will need to run the SQL 2012 installation process again, and add that component. You may want to remove the 2005 installation first (backup your database first, of course). If you've used WAMP or LAMP, what you have is equivalent to installing different versions of My SQL (the database) and PHPMy Admin (the GUI). Or Oracle and Toad.
